We have many targets to hit regarding global warming, one of them is to reduce the amount of energy used by households. Some of the suggestions/improvements that are being made include installing an energy usage meter – so that people know how much they are spending. Another idea is to install solar panels or heat source pumps.

Well there are some much simpler ways to achieve this, the biggest way people can save on energy in the home is to insulate their homes properly. The best places to insulate a home is in the roof, which commonly many people do, but often floor insulation and wall insulation is neglected – and this is where real gains can be made.

Another method is to install underfloor heating – this can have an enormous effect on energy saved heating the house – in fact one study said it can be as much as 20%. When laying underfloor heating is is best to install the underfloor insulation at the same time – this will save you having to pry up the floorboards twice.

If you want to get really extreme there are a number of airtight houses made in Germany that actually require a ventilation system – they retain heat so well that just being in there and talking/moving creates heat which warms the room. This is the extreme end of the scale though, and quite frankly I’d find having a ventilation system just so I can breathe slightly concerning, wouldn’t you?
